Wembly’s Trip to Mexico

In November of last year (2023), Wembly took his first international adventure, joining his human parents on their honeymoon to Playa del Carmen (south of Cancun), Mexico! What an amazing time we had sharing this week on the shores of the beautiful Caribbean Sea.

We saw all types of animals, beautiful scenery, and historical sites… Here are some great photos of Wembly’s adventure… Enjoy

Gallery 1 (Occidental Resort)

We really enjoyed our time relaxing at this resort. While here we saw green & red macaws, iguanas, pelicans, coatis, spider monkeys, crabs. Additional animals we saw that we did not get photos of were deer, capybara, and a whole host of birds.

Gallery 2 (Xcaret Park)

Such fun couple days at this water park that sits next to our resort. We did have a bit of drama though, as during our river float, I lost my wedding ring and thought that it was gone forever! Fortunately, because of our persistence, Natalie’s (my wife) eagle eyes, and the help of two amazing park staff members (Karla & Luis) we were able to find (miraculously) my ring. I apparently lost it 50 feet from the exit of the attraction. After the drama of that experience, we were able to enjoy the water park with an amazing show, and a swim party with the dolphins!! We were able to see another bunch of animals along the way. In addition to tapirs, manatees, nurse sharks, and sea turtles, we saw flamingos, tons of butterflies in the Butterfly Pavilion, more spider monkeys, and so many birds in the aviary including the toucan and pelicans seen in this gallery.

Gallery 3 (Chichen Itza & Tulum)

While we visited these two locations on different days, I thought they fit well together as both are amazing Mayan sites with insane history.

Fun Fact #1 - The pryamid you see in Chichen Itza is actually one of THREE! Like a Russian nesting doll, one stacked upon the other. Wild!! What is even more amazing is that the pyramid was built over a massive cenote (underground cave with water), of which had special meaning to the Mayan people.

Fun Fact #2 - The Mayan ruins of Tulum are said to be the only ruins that sit directly on the coast of the Caribbean Sea.

Wembly had a blast on both of these excursions and turns out he makes friends wherever he goes! A group of teachers from Washington happened to recognize him and he made friends with a sweet girl who instantly fell in love with his big smile!

Gallery 4 (Cenotes)

Cenotes hold a special place in the Mayan culture. In addition to being a main source of water, according to our guide, they were also considered it to be the entrance to the to the underworld. It is believed that the Mayan gods would visit through these cenotes, most notably the Mayan god of rain, thunder and lightning. The water was cold but so wonderful and clear.

We did have a special treat when Wembly got to help make some traditional Mayan corn tortillas from a local Mayan citizen. Yay and yum! While traveling with the touring group, Wembly stumbled across a new stuffy best buddy! Met Mr Piggy!

This was the first, in what I hope, is lifetime of travel adventures with Wembly and my family!!

What adventures do you have planned? What places are you going with your family?

Love,
David & Wembly
