My Top 5 Children’s Picture Books

The world of children's picture books is a wonderful place full of inspiration. As I spend more time reading others' books, I've been creating a rolodex of ideas for future books. Recently, I watched a BBC Maestro course from Julia Donaldson, the author of the best-selling children's book, The Gruffalo. I loved how she referenced other children's books that served as inspiration for her writing.

In my research, I've come across some amazing books that are both creative and entertaining. While there are some classics that we all know and love, like Oh, the Places You Will Go and The Giving Tree, I want to share some of my recent favorites that have touched my heart in one way or another.

  1. Knight Owl

Are you looking for a new children's book to add to your collection? Look no further than "Knight Owl" by Christopher Denise! This charming story follows a brave little owl on his quest to become a knight, overcoming obstacles along the way. The fantastic illustrations bring Owl's journey to life, making it a joy to read for both kids and adults alike. Don't miss out on this creative and heartwarming tale!

Have you ever stumbled upon a story that just made you laugh uncontrollably? That's exactly how I felt when I came across this hilarious tale. I first saw a video of a grandmother reading it to her granddaughter and couldn't stop laughing at her infectious joy and her peels of laughter. The star of the story, The Wonkey Donkey, is a character you won't soon forget. Trust me, you'll love it just as much as I do!

I recently read "Guess How Much I Love You" by Sam McBratney and it truly touched my heart. This sweet and touching story beautifully captures the love between a parent and their child. It reminded me of the game my boys and their mother play when sharing how much they love each other, using the EXACT same line from the final page of the book: "I love you right up to the moon and back." If you're looking for a heartwarming read that celebrates the bond between parent and child, I highly recommend this book.

As a self-proclaimed pug enthusiast, I couldn't resist picking up this gem of a book from my local bookstore! "Bug on the Rug" by Sophia Gholz is a fun and engaging story with hilarious rhymes and illustrations that perfectly capture the personality of pugs. And let me tell you, the ending twist had me grinning ear to ear. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good laugh and a heartwarming story. Can't wait to see if there will be a sequel!

As a father, I couldn't help but be moved by "I Wish You More," a heartwarming children's book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & Tom Lichtenheld. This book perfectly captures the love and hopes that all parents have for their children. The illustrations are simple yet powerful, using white space to create a beautiful and pure message. It's a must-read for anyone with little ones in their lives. Check it out!
